North Quarter Creole & My Big Fat Family

I always love any weekend when my brother comes to town for a visit because my whole family tends to spend more time together.  Of course, I have to get through the visit without going insane, because they drive me crazy!

This weekend was no different and Saturday was really a nice day.  I wanted to get some measurements and double check radiator placement at the new house, so I made a visit with my realtor and the “posse.”  (Seriously, I think I rolled in with eight other people…)  I loved everyone getting to see my house, and now I can do my nerd thing and draft up all the rooms to scale and figure out rug sizes and furniture placement.

Then we checked out North Quarter Creole, a new-ish restaurant on Union in downtown Wilmington.  Seriously, it was so good.  After living on the gulf coast for the first five years of my life, my family is really into Cajun food and we’ve really struggled to find a place that meets our criteria up “north.”  For those who have frequented New Orleans, North Quarter isn’t 100% authentic, but it’s definitely the closest you’ll come here in a Yankee state and the food was so delicious.

We were there for lunch and loved it.  The prices are already great, but as the restaurant builds its customer base they’re offering really good deals – Saturday lunch means that all appetizers (normally $8-$12) are only $5.  Around the table, we ordered a few quesadillas, and the appetizer quesadilla is easily a meal, two for me!  The mural in the restaurant was really cool and we just loved everything about the place.  (Sorry about the lack of food photos.  We got about 90% of the way through eating and I realized I should take some…)

Post-lunch, we all headed to the riverfront to see My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.  Even though we’d all heard it received terrible reviews, we just knew it would be so fun for all of us to go together.  We were right: even though I can honestly say it really wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece, it was the right amount of one-liners and relatable jokes for anyone in a big family that we were still entertained.  I’d still recommend saving it for a Redbox rental though.

Our last Saturday activity was a family dinner for my birthday.  It’s always nice when everyone gets together and my mom really does a great job of putting on an event.  My favorite part were the hot pink leopard cupcakes – so me!

Around Delaware: Flight Club at Chelsea Tavern

Dela Darling - Flight Club at Chelsea Tavern

I really enjoy my day job and everything I get to do, but I really love some of my coworkers.  Jess recently joined my company and has quickly become a great friend.  I really get along well with her and her boyfriend and share so many interests.

Like me, Jess is usually up for trying out something new and she really enjoys experiencing Wilmington and Newark, specifically the beer scene.  I, of course, love that I have a friend who isn’t allergic to beer so we can do flight tastings together!

Dela Darling - Flight Club at Chelsea Tavern

A few weeks ago she brought me with her to Chelsea Tavern on Market St. for my first “flight club.”  That’s right – “flight club,” a play on the popular movie set in Wilmington, Fight Club. (Maybe you’ve heard of it?)

Anyway, it was so awesome!  For $10, you get five different craft drafts in 6 oz. pours.  Not only is it a really great deal, but it’s fun to try new beers, and each pour is enough to appreciate the beer, but not too much to overwhelm you if you don’t love it.  There’s also a little bit of food for you to snack on as well as the well-priced happy hour menu to choose from.

Flight Club from this week was so cool and featured Girl Scout cookie pairings.  As soon as I heard that I was sold!  The flight consisted of:

Seriously, how cool is that?

Flight Club is such a great deal and after you’ve officially “joined” by attending a minimum of four flight club tastings, you get all kinds of awesome discounts and deals at Chelsea Tavern all the time.  Nothing better than that.

Flight Club takes place from 5:30-7:30 in the downstairs room at Chelsea Tavern.

NYE Recap – A Taste for Wine & Murder

This NYE was ridiculously fun.  I was so excited to spend it with old friends (sorority sisters) and new (my trivia team).  Honestly we had such a great time.  We did a murder mystery dinner party, A Taste for Wine & Murder, which was so much fun.

the murder mystery

We had such a fun time with our murder mystery.  Everyone in the group was really invested in their characters (think very thick Russian accents and actual Italian all night long) and in the story.  How could you not be when the setting is a winery?

Rating: 9/10

I loved the game and we had a great time, probably one of the best boxed murder games I’ve ever done.  The only downside was that the “nonessential” characters were so nonessential we had to really stretch it.  Luckily my girlfriends were good sports about that!

Food

We had such an amazing dinner.  Financially it was a great decision to stay home as we ended up doing it potluck and everyone saved a boatload of money even though we had a more lush meal.  We started with appetizers – crackers & a variety of cheese from Trader Joe’s, as well as veggies and dip.  We moved onto a really great salad and then had filet mignon, crabcakes, mashed potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts for our main course.  We rounded out the evening with a platter of peppermint brownies and raspberry brownies.

Rating: 10/10

Surf and turf is such a staple to me as a NYE dinner, but it’s so expensive when you go out.  Great decision to opt for staying in.

Drinks

We drank wine, of course!  Since the mystery setting was a Napa winery, we had to imbibe on amazing reds and whites.  My favorite of the night was the Apothic White blend.  We also had a great Malbec and a Pinot Grigio.  Obviously at midnight we rounded it out with champagne.  My favorite place to buy alcohol is Costco.  Seriously the prices are amazing, especially on the Kirkland brand, which usually is manufactured and bottled at wineries/distilleries more well known.  Since they are essentially the same and 1/2 to 2/3 of the cost, it’s a no-brainer!

Rating: 8/10

Our drink selection was great and I loved everything I had, but it definitely would have been great to have our own bartender for the night!
